Electric service vehicle for more sustainability
"For faster and more efficient handling of the work tasks within the Department of Engineering and Construction Planning (K4), quick and safe transport of material and tool technology is essential, especially during on-call duty and in the event of breakdowns," says Clemens Klein, head of the department. A separate service vehicle offers considerable advantages here, as it can be tailored to the specific requirements of the operating technology, thus shortening reaction, travel and transport times. "In addition, materials and tools can be transported independently in smaller quantities, which relieves the internal transport and speeds up the processes," Clemens Klein emphasises, also against the background that the number of buildings outside the main campus is constantly increasing. Examples here are the new research buildings at the medical campus and in Barleben.
For reasons of sustainability, an electric vehicle was chosen as the official vehicle for K4. Electric cars offer numerous advantages over vehicles with combustion engines, such as their environmental friendliness and cost efficiency, emphasises the head of department. Electric cars require less maintenance and electricity could be cheaper compared to petrol or diesel. In addition, electric cars do not contribute to air pollution and the greenhouse effect when in operation, as they do not emit harmful emissions such as carbon dioxide (CO2). "As the university is committed to environmental friendliness and sustainability, the use of electric vehicles as part of this strategy can contribute to this," concludes Clemens Klein and continues "In the short and medium term, OVGU will also become an electricity producer and then feed its electric vehicles with its own green-produced electricity from photovoltaic systems. Overall, this combination is a good choice for more sustainable mobility and can contribute to lower operating costs and a better environmental balance."
