President of the Saxon Academy of Sciences visits OVGU
The President of the Saxon Academy of Sciences SAW, Prof. Dr. rer. pol. Hans Wiesmeth (2nd from left), came on a working visit to the campus of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. At the meeting with the rector, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Strackeljan (right), the science minister of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Prof. Armin Willingmann (2nd from right), and academician, chemist and materials engineer Prof. Michael Scheffler (left), who holds the chair of materials engineering for non-metallic inorganic materials and composites at the University of Magdeburg, discussions included the possibility of future joint projects.
Founded in 1846 as the Royal Saxon Society of Sciences, the SAW is a young academy compared to the Royal Society, the Académie française or the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in Halle. It stands in the tradition of the academy idea coined by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz around 1700, to bring together scientists from a wide range of disciplines for regular exchanges of views, to discuss methods and results across disciplines, to pursue research projects and to disseminate research results to society. The Saxon Academy of Sciences has more than 200 nationally and internationally renowned scientists from various disciplines as members. The president of the SAW regularly visits the universities of its members for an exchange. In addition to President Prof. Wiesmeth, Vice President Prof. Wolfgang Huschner and other representatives of the Academy also took part in the visit.
