New quarters for vehicle fleet and nursery
A new building has been erected on the north-eastern edge of the campus, somewhat unnoticed by the current construction activity. A two-storey flat building in grey and orange nestles against the north gable of building 20, providing offices with flexible furniture as well as modern social rooms and sanitary facilities with showers. The gardeners, who not only have a bright and friendly recreation room with a computer workstation here, can now also prepare and repair their technology and equipment at working level in their new "armoury" in the basement of the building. Before the new building, they had to carry all parts to the basement in building 20, the former quarters of the gardening team.
With the commissioning of the new replacement building, which, like the dilapidated vehicle fleet building previously located in the same place, bears the number 21, it is not only the working conditions for the gardeners that have improved. The fleet team has also moved into the new building. In a separate office with a service area, matters relating to the issuing of operating licences, the organisation of transports and the ordering of service vehicles and electric cargo bikes can be dealt with, and keys and papers can be collected and returned. The foyer in front is available for instruction and training as well as for general advice to vehicle users.
"Now everything is new, friendly and more comfortable for the colleagues, even if the available space has become somewhat smaller and more compact," says Thomas Reske, head of the department for security services and open space management (K52). "In the past years, the gardeners' and the gardeners' assistants' stay away from the practical work activities was rather hidden - each for himself. Now there are better conditions for networking and for more optimal communication and coordination possibilities."
The old cellar quarters of the nursery were not only getting on in years, it had a ceiling height that was far too low, was difficult to ventilate and the plaster was crumbling. It was draughty and cold underfoot in the car pool flat, which had once been a garage converted into offices. "The final reason for the current new building on the site of the flat building and the old garages was not only the crumbling plaster, but also the structurally questionable cracks in the walls and floors," explains Jan Wilhelm, Head of Central Services. "In addition, the old offices and recreation rooms could no longer be heated sufficiently, the sanitary facilities were outdated or, for some workplaces, could only be reached outside the building. They were simply no longer contemporary working conditions."
During the construction work, the fleet team had moved into building 18 and managed the deployment of the vehicles from there.
In addition to the new building, the neatly paved courtyard of the vehicle fleet is now surrounded by 21 new garages and carports, primarily with parking spaces for vehicles and equipment, as well as storage areas. In addition, a small washing hall and the corresponding charging infrastructure for the vehicle fleet, which has already been partially converted to e-vehicles, and the OVGU's cargo bikes have been built. On the courtyard side facing the Nordpark, where the energy centre is to be built in the course of implementing the Energy Concept 2020, there are still dilapidated garages. They, too, will soon make way for the wrecking ball. And before the end of the year, the access road to the vehicle park at the Hohenstaufenring campus entrance is to be closed again with a temporary gate.
